08:50 am - 18th century lace fans
18th century lace fans are scarce. In fact many people in a life time of collecting never see one for sale. However, they are quite distinctive if you can see a few of them. One of the ways to date these fans is by the sticks they are on. 18th century sticks tend to be quite slender and they are, in the case of lace fans, often simple as well especially in the early fans.

Then there's the lace. 18th century lace is very fine in the sense that the threads used are very thin and one of the distinctive features of the best of these fans are scenes showing people in imitation of painted leaves. This post may help you if run across one of these fans somewhere and the owner doesn't know what it is.

The leaf on this fan may well have been taken from some other piece of lace and cut to fit the sticks rather than being especially made for the fan.
